MATE’s at-sea internship program is a unique opportunity to participate on a PAID summer internship at sea. This summer, we will have 10-15 positions for students to assist marine technicians and science parties aboard cutting edge scientific research vessels. The MATE Center will provide the travel costs for interns to participate on research cruises throughout the country and the world! Past interns have gone to the Galapagos, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Alaska, Hawaii and many other places! You will have the opportunity to learn how to operate and maintain a variety of scientific and navigational equipment, and experience how scientific research is conducted at sea. MATE’s at-sea internships opportunities have ranged from onboard chemistry projects, biological surveys, GIS/bathymetric surveys (seafloor mapping), geological studies, work with ROVs, AUVs, manned submersibles, and much more! Room, board and a $300/week stipend will be provided to each intern. Interns will gain transferable skills that can be used in any position; intrapersonal (people), computer, team work, technology, marine research techniques, marine electronics and communication skills. Come experience what life is like at sea through these incredible internship opportunities!!!!
The Gulf SERPENT Project is based at Louisiana State University (LSU) and coordinates SERPENT Project activities in the Gulf of Mexico. The SERPENT Project is a partnership between academia and industry that uses industrial remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to conduct scientific research during operational standby time. In the Gulf of Mexico the research focuses on animals that live in the water column, particularly in the mesopelagic and upper bathypelagic zones. This internship is a six-week opportunity to work with the Gulf SERPENT Project. The successful applicant will be based in Baton Rouge, LA, live in LSU student housing and work on campus in the Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences. The primary duties of the intern will be to analyze and collate video data on marine life collected with industrial ROVs. The intern may be required to travel to offshore oil rigs and drillships to work with the ROV groups during data collection. While every reasonable effort will be made to enable the intern to travel offshore, we cannot guarantee this will occur. Access to these facilities depends on weather, the nature of offshore operations, and space on board the rigs/ships. This internship opportunity aims to make cutting-edge ROV technology and data more accessible to the world’s science community, sharing knowledge and progressing deep-sea research. The program will increase the awareness of our fragile marine resources.
